Summer Research

One of the greatest opportunities for professional improvement is waiting for you in the Summer Research Experiences.

Science majors with more than 30 credits and a GPA greater than 3.0 qualify.

Over 50 students apply succesfully each year.

The Summer Research experience offers the following:

  • Salary up to typically $4,000 during the summer (Amount depends on the weeks and Research location.)
  • Learn new techniques and how to conduct research.
  • Upon your return to UPR Cayey, you participate in the Student Symposium presenting your results.
  • Travel to summer reserach site is paid for by the sponsor.

In addition:

  • You will spend 8 - 10 weeks in the USA conducting research with other students.
  • Gain the respect of a mentor who can recommend you for more opportunities.
  • Complete 1-2 credits in Biology 4995 or Chemistry 4990.

To Apply

  • Completed Application with two letters of Recommendation from science professors.
  • A copy of your current College transcript in English
  • A copy of your College Board Scores (if you are a freshman)

The program is run each summer and provides intensive, individualized Biomedical research experiences in

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

All participants must be United States citizens or permanent residents.

The application deadline for the RISE program is the end of February.

The Summer program will run from June until the first week of August. Participants receive a salary, usually free University housing, and travel costs. The core of the program is an individual research project carried out under the supervision of one of the participating faculty members at the host institution. The scientific program typically includes research presentation by faculty, group discussion of articles from the scientific literature, presentation on career options and scientific ethics, and a concluding symposiumin where all students present the results from their research. In addition to the scientific program, students participate in a variety of other activities.
